In this guide will cover about HOW TO fix the Epic Games Launcher not showing Unreal Engine 4 (UE 4 Engine Editor)

Hello Everyone, My name is Abdul Rehman.

Thank you for joining me.

This fix applies to almost, all of the following error’s.

Please make sure you have a backup copy of your UE 4 Engine editor/s.

Saved in a C drive path or separate drive/folder.

Downloading, again ue 4 engine can take lot of time, it depends upon your internet speed.

Please Download, install & login to Epic Launcher.

As you can see in my library, nothing is showing installed.

Where as in my previously installed/backup folder of ue 4 engine,  i have all my ue 4 directories listed.

Even I can run the ue 4 editor application, Open or Create a new Project.

The question is HOW TO fix this? without downloading whole engine.

But, using our existing Unreal Engine backup.

In this guide will try with 2 Methods.

  1. Creating Symbolic link between Original and Source folder.
  2. Copying and Overwriting to the target installation directory.

Let start with the METHOD 1.

Search for command prompt and run the program as administrator.

Before dive into command terminal let me show you one thing.

I have created a separate folder where I saved my UE 4.24 engine editor from backup.

And if I try to install same unreal engine version to that folder, the following error displayed.

Directory must be empty

This means, I have to delete the  ue 4.24 directory and re-download all required files & folder  to make this work.

Let’s fix this, before that I have deleted UE 4.24 folder.

Creating Symbolic link between Original and Source folder

Go to your Epic Games Launcher – Library – Click to install your selected unreal engine version.

Select your installation path and click INSTALL.

Please wait for a while, let launcher create a directory structure for unreal engine.

This will take 2 – 5 mins.

Once the initializing completed and downloading started from Internet.

Pause and cancel the installation, Please don’t close the launcher.

If you are doing same as I am, you’ll be stuck with Resume option.

Now go to your installation directory and rename the folder UE_4.24 to UE_4.24_copy

Which is recently created by Epic Games Launcher.

The logic is very simple, we are going to create a shortcut ink file, another word is SYMBOLIC.

In command prompt, type the following command.

mklink /D “yourdrive:\your_installation_directory\UE_4.24” “yourdrive:\backup_folder\UE_4.24”

If you look at mine, it is.

mklink /D “f:\Desklab\UE_4.24” “f:\Epic Games\UE_4.24”

Let me explain.

  1. mklink /D (is a command)
  2. “f:\Desklab\UE_4.24” (is a installation path, selected in a launcher )
  3. “f:\Epic Games\UE_4.24” (this is my backup folder of  ue 4 engine)

You need to use quotes ( ” ) as showed in command or this will not work.

Once SYMBOLIC link created.

Go to your Epic Games Launcher and CLICK on Resume to start the installation.

But this time it will not download from Internet.

This process can take 15 mins to 1+ hour.

Congratulations, Installation, file verification and clean up is successfully completed.

As we have completed Method 1, Let me show you Method 2.

Copying and Overwriting files to the target installation directory

  • Transferring your data from old PC/Laptop to new one?
  • Changing old hard drive to new hard drive/SSD?

Then Method 2 is for you!

The initial step is same.

Add your unreal engine version, Click the install button to start the installation.

Wait for a while….

Epic Games launcher will create a directory structure in our selected installation path.

Once the initializing completed and downloading started.

Pause and cancel the installation, don’t close the launcher.

Now go to your backup drive/folder.

Copy your ue 4 engine version to your installation directory, replace and overwrite all.

Once the copying finished.

Go to your Epic Games Launcher and CLICK on Resume to start the installation.

Again, this will take time.

So relax and grab a cup of Coffee/Tea or whatever you want 🙂

Congratulations, Installation, file verification and clean up is successfully completed.
